Music Box Movement - One Note At A Time
By Beatrice Robertson
Dear Craig,
The only music box movement I can think of that would play one note at a
time is one driven by a ratchet. I have two toys in my collection that
work that way - one is a small yellow plastic piano and the other is a
small plastic guitar. Otherwise, music boxes generally are either spring
or crank driven, and neither of them would play one note at a time.
Sorry, I'm not willing to sacrifice my toys (whatever would I play
with?) but you might find one at a big flea market or "antique" (using
the term loosely) mall. That is a pretty good source for musical toys.
If all else fails, small mechanical wind up music box movements are
available in most large craft stores and through many craft catalogs.
But they are not one note at a time.

[ I have a childhood memory of one of these rocking chair music
[ boxes. I remember sitting on the floor next to the chair, rocking
[ it quickly back and forth just enough for the little protrusion on
[ the bottom of the box to hit the floor and release. This was the
[ only way I could hear the tune fast enough to be entertained by it...
