I think it was Craig Brougher who mentioned a recorded interview with an
artist commenting on their performance, and that he had been endevouring
to locate a copy.
I have the four interviews that Beno Moiseiwitsch did for the BBC. These
are as follows: "Talking to Dennis Geroult about piano rolls", 26 Oct
1962; "From the series Cock-a-doodle Doo", 21 Sept 1940; "Describing 50
Years as a Performer", 21 Sept 1946; "Schumann -- Introductory Talk to a
Series of Recitals", 18 Sept 1951.
In the first one he spends a lot of time talking about his rolls for
Ampico -- how he went about the recording, listening to the edited
versions before release, etc. He has several rolls played to him ( which
are not included on the tape I have) but he does make comments about his
performance. In one instance he is very concerned about the tempo of the
performance being too fast. He comments several times during the
interview that he never played it that fast.
He also says he preferred making the rolls to recording in the studios,
as he was very nervous and he did not believe he played as well as he did
for the Ampico. I can't remember all the details of these interviews,
but if anyone is interested I could get the sections dealing with his
Ampico and recordings transcribed.
