Reproducing Concert Grands
By Gerhard Dangel

This discussion is very interesting for me. We know that Welte built two
concert grands, one for the Berlin Symponie Hall, the other one was in
Freiburg. Both were burned in the war.

I know an earwitness of a recording session with the Berlin-grand for the
"Reichsrundfunk" (a nice word, it could perhaps be translated with
"Imperial Wireless") in 1938/1939. The tapes/wires of this recordings
seem to be in Moscow since 1945.

Rumour also says that Welte built one concert grand for the US. These
concert grand pianos were most probably used with common rolls, but the
adjustment must have been a very complicated act done by Karl Bockisch
(brother-in-law of Edwin Welte) and two company technicians.

[ I heard a rumor of recordings by Walter Gieseking with the Berlin
[ Philharmonic Orchestra, tape-recorded -- in *stereo* sound -- by
[ Reichsrundfunk circa 1944. An Allied bombing raid can be faintly
[ heard in the background ! -- Robbie
