Filmusic Roll "Reuben and Rachel"
By Darrell Clarke

G'day all, I have a Filmusic roll titled "Reuben and Rachel" played by Ed Horton and I am curious to know who these characters were. A musician friend thinks they might be "generic" country folk, but I have a feeling that I have heard of them somewhere before. I guess they were very (Jewish?, Negro?) American which is why we don't know them here in OZ. Was there a silent movie by that name or were they popular stage or movie characters?

I have another Filmusic roll called "Japanese Sunset" which is actually a MetroArt roll "re-badged" and it caused a few laughs when I played it for some Japanese friends who did not recognise the style. I guess it was a Western idea of suitable theme music for Oriental movie scenes. I have another again called "Furioso" which is quite dramatic, but rather monotonous without the visuals. I'm keeping a look-out for more of these interesting silent movie rolls.

I thought I would mention in passing, that from my experience, "Megumi" is a lady's name in Japan.

If Megumi Imai is a lady, she may be too shy to mention it, but if that is not the case, then I am embarrassed! It is always nice to hear of members of the fairer sex repairing these wonderful machines, as a change from mostly "blokes". It must have been quite tricky to work on a "one off" machine like that, with little or no information available.

Cheers,
