Printing Word Rolls

Would it be possible to adapt 'banner printing' software for such a use? I believe HP Desk Jets come with banner software, but I don't know if the ink used in ink jets would be permanent enough. Seems to me a stripped- down 'jet' mechanism would be perfect. I've an old Desk Jet 500 sitting here if anyone wants to give it a go?
Of course, no one would want 6" tall words on their new rolls. ... Or would they? :) Just a thought.
