Brian Steptoe's Gallopers
By Ron Yost
Thanks, Matthew, for pointing out the wonderful Carousel pages!
While there, please be sure to visit Brian Steptoe's "UK Gallopers" pages. For those who don't know, 'Gallopers' are marvelous English Carousels, which turn backward from those in the U.S. and are also *much* faster. Also, the horses pivot from the top and swing-out with the momentum.
Most have a large Gavioli or Marenghi Fairground Organ in the center as well (mounted on the Organ Truck). The whole works is usually powered by a beautiful Showman's steam-engine (coal-powered) which runs a huge generator mounted on the top front of the boiler that, in turn, provides electrical power to the ride.
Wow -- brings back memories of Stourpaine '86. But that's another story.

Be sure to allow yourself quite some time as there is _much_ to see and learn here, including many beautiful pictures of these most-special of English Fairground attractions.
Have fun!
