Chicago AMICA Pianola Concerts
By Eric Bergstrom
The Chicago AMICA invites you to participate in the fun & celebration of the player piano!
This year marks the 100th year for the player piano and we're having a party! Mr. Daniel Wilson (a regular on MMD) and Mr. Rex Lawson are flying in from London to perform at three major concerts in the western Chicago suburbs. Five days of events are scheduled, starting on Wednesday April 5th, and ending on Sunday, April 6th.
The first concert is to be held on Friday April 4th at 7:00 P.M. at the Waubonsee Community College Auditorium in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Rex Lawson will be performing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and other jazz and blues numbers.
On Saturday, a concert and technical demonstration will be held at 3:00 P.M. at Pedals Pumpers and Rolls, in Batavia, IL. Dan and Rex will demonstrate a 9-1/2 foot Weber Duo-Art reproducer as well as other machines on display.
On Saturday night, at 7:00 P.M. an "Open Pianola" party will be held at Walter Payton's Roundhouse in Aurora, IL, and the attendees are invited to to pump their own rolls. Dine at the roundhouse and tour the complex which has a micro brewery, a cigar bar, and Walter Payton museum complete with Super Bowl rings.
The festival finale kicks off with a birthday party luncheon at 12:30 PM, again at Walter Payton's. At 3:30 PM the GALA CONCERT for the Player Piano will be presented at the Paramount Arts Center in Aurora, IL. Rex Lawson will perform the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto 1 with the Fox Vally Symphony orchestra.
If you are planning on being anywhere near the Chicago-land area in early April, don't miss it. You will see master pianolists at work playing with a symphony orchestra.
