Ampico Expression Levels
By Damon Atchison
I am still very curious about how many levels of expression certain reproducing pianos had, and when, where, and how that was applied. I once heard that a reproducer had 18 levels of expression! Another of my questions was how that expression was applied. Was it applied to the whole section of the song, for example 30 seconds of a song would be in expression level 3 then it would change to level 2, or could it be applied with two levels of expression at once for example, one for the bass at the same time the treble would play another level of expression?

[ If you watch a fast-responding vacuum gage connected to the action [ stack you will see practically _every_ imaginable level. Although [ the _coding_ may be limited to discrete values, the result at the [ pneumatic is altered by many other factors. Just listen to good [ audio recordings of well-restored instruments playing well-edited [ music rolls, and you will be quite impressed. Let your ears judge [ the _results_ of the system first, and you'll say, "How did they [ make it sound so realistic!" ;-) -- Robbie |
