Herb Lindahl asks about pulleys for a Duo-Art Steamboat Pump. I don't
know anyone who is making exact replacements of the original pulleys,
although there seems to be a demand for them, as the original pot metal
often did not survive. Since the original pulleys did not use a belt that
is available today, it does not make a lot of sense to duplicate them
exactly, only to have the speed wrong due to the modern belt causing a
change in pitch diameter.
If the originals are cast iron, they can usually be repaired. If not,
modern cast iron pulleys can be installed that accomplish the same speed
reduction, but do not look entirely the same. To get the speed exact, you
need to custom size the motor pulley. If you use rubber belts, you can
get by with half the original number of v-ways.
Appropriate hubs and bearings need to be machined and mounted to the new
pulleys. If you are ready for a real machining project, you can even fit
the original number in, but this is tough since there is little room to
fit the six v-ways and set-screws for the intermediate pulley, but it is
possible.
The cost of casting and machining a duplicate set would probably be
prohibitive, but if anyone wants to do it, I have a set that I can
measure or possibly lend to use as a pattern. (Of course, the copy would
come out a little smaller due to shrinkage.)
