Phenoseal Warning
By Joe Hutter

Over the years I have worked on several mechanical music machines and have used Phenoseal in many and varied places. I've used it to seal many chambers, channels and pouch boards etc. A few weeks ago, during my rebuild of an Aeolian Orchestrelle, I tested the pouch/channel board and found that I had multiple leaks between adjacent channels. So, my next step was to pour Phenoseal through each of the channels in an effort to seal off the leaks.

About one hour later, I was shocked by the aftermath of that operation. It had de-laminated the entire assembly. Evidently, this unit was never internally sealed with shellac when new, and the water-based Phenoseal dissolved the hot glue which separated the assembly. What a mess!

My word of caution goes out to all you rebuilders to beware of Phenoseal on untreated hot glued assemblies. I learned my lesson the hard way!

Best regards,
