Cataloging a Roll Collection
By Dave Miller

I know this is an old topic but searching the MMD archives I didn't see exactly what I was looking for.

I am in the process of cataloging my 450 or so 88-note rolls, and before I spend hours typing in the info I thought I'd see what I could learn from those who have gone before me in this endeavor. I am creating this catalog for the following reasons:

1. I've finally reached the point where I cannot positively say whether or not I own a particular roll. I'd like to have a list of all the titles.

2. As I move the rolls from various boxes to a storage cabinet it will make it easier to put them in alphabetical order (i.e. make it easier to find them in the future).

3. If I had a list I could put it on the web and perhaps solicit trades, etc. If other people did this it would be interesting to browse (and perhaps extract data from) their catalogs.

I am not a "collector," but like all of us when I see a really good deal on used rolls that I don't have and that sound intriguing, I have a hard time passing them up. I

What I am looking for is:

- What have people used their catalogs for? What fields have been the most useful?

- What fields are used in the "rollographies?" (I've never seen one of these) Is there a precedent that would be good to follow? Keep in mind this is just for my personal use, I'm not running a museum or anything.

- Are there any roll catalogs on the web?

Thanks,

Dave Miller
