Comparison of Welte Reproducing Systems
By Dave McNally

Greetings, A non-Internet acquaintance has the chance to buy a Steinway upright with a Welte player intact, supposedly a Green Welte system manufactured in Europe, not the Licensee version. (I always thought Steinway and Duo-Art were bedfellows, not Steinway and Welte)

Could someone familiar with Welte please give me a nutshell description/ comparison of the Red (T-100), Green and Licensee versions? Such facts as who manufactured which, and where and when; roll width and compatibility with regular non-Welte 88-note rolls; desirability of one version over another from an owner's perspective; probable availability of rolls/recuts; educated guess at restored value.

I've retrieved and read the digests from ftp.foxtail.com that have any posts about Welte and looked it up in a couple of books in my own library, but a clear picture fails to emerge. The terms 'red' and 'green' appear to be a more recent colloquialism. I've encountered the Licensee version personally, but only peripherally, and a long time ago at that.

Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Dave McNally - mac366@ibm.net
