Player Rebuilding Tips
By Larry Toto
I would like to second Debbie Legg's advice to first time player rebuilders. I snapped photos and made drawings with measurements on almost every piece. My first complete rebuild is documented with about 400 photos.
Overkill? Maybe, but I still wished I had taken one or two more from a different angle. Many of the photos were due to uncontrolled pride in my work. I also thought at the time that I was doing something that no one else is doing. I had no idea that there is an interesting group of player enthusiasts out there.
One interesting issue that I ran into was how to recover the bellows and reservoirs without filling with glue the dozen or more screw holes around the edges where the cloth is glued. Unless something is done to prevent hot glue from filling the screw holes, you may never locate the holes again without removing the cloth.
I make penciled templates (rubbing the edge of a lead pencil) along a strip of wide masking tape to create an impression of hole locations and edges of boards (for alignment). Also, try to avoid delaying the rebuild once you tear open an assembly. Time has a way of making an essential piece appear vestigial.
