Wood Finishing Oil
By Spencer Chase
Another oil that is useful for furniture repairs is oitiseca (sp?) oil, also known as Brazilian Rosewood Oil. It hardens well and builds up to provide a luster that no other oil finish can match. It is available as Penofin interior oil finish. It comes in various shades and can be tinted with universal colorants.
Oil finishes "dry" or harden by oxidation. This is usually assisted in commercial formulas by dryers. It is best to stick to the prepared products of known properties unless you know how to mix them yourself.
Once you find something don't be surprised if suddenly the formula changes. For an example, Minwax stains used to be very useful for touch up and blending when one did not want to go through the whole water stain routine. Now they make only a finish and stain in one that is virtually useless except for slopping up a really cheap ugly highly-porous wood into a covered-up even uglier wood.
