Baldwin Manualo Modello
By Larry Lobel
I'm restoring my third player piano, but this one is different from the first two in several significant ways. It's a Modello piano, made by Baldwin, with the Manualo player that was used in all Baldwin-made players.
When I removed the striker pneumatics from their decks, I found a gasket instead of a wood-to-wood mating, as in other players. As I took off the pneumatics, a layer of heavy fabric came with them. Left underneath is a sort of plaster-like material, and below that is another layer of fabric glued to the wood of the deck below it.
Another difference is that in the Manualo, the valves and pouches are directly below the pneumatic deck, so the remaining layers of fabric/ gasket material cover open holes leading into the valve chambers. So it seems to me I must remove the rest of the gasket material, clean out the mess it will make in the valve chambers, and replace it with some suitable material to avoid getting glue into the chambers when I re-glue the pneumatics onto the deck.
If anyone has experience with or knowledge of this type of player, would you do this the same way I think I should, and what kind of material would you use to replace this gasket?
Thanks for any help anyone can give.
