New Springs for Ampicos
By Chris Kalstone
I have been rebuilding and restoring reproducing pianos since 1982, and I've owned a player since the age of 14. One question that has not been brought up concerns the springs on the Ampicos -- the crescendo spring on the A's and the spill valve spring on the B's. I have seen an ad in AMICA with new springs for sale. I couldn't find the ad when I wrote this. He said replacing your 50+year-old springs would make your system really "spring" back to life -- guaranteed, or your money back.
Another item not mentioned was Player Piano Co's Teflon inserts for the expression mechanisms, with less friction and more sensitivity between intensities. Do you know anyone who has used these after-market products? You can tell I am no writer, I am just "springing" along.
Thanks, Chris Kalstone
[ Your letter is fine, Chris! Craig Brougher wrote about Ampico [ springs a few months ago, but I don't recall about Teflon inserts. [ Perhaps Craig will re-visit the topics. -- Robbie
