Switched-off Keys
By Jack M. Conway
Last year AMICA reprinted for the membership "How To Play The Pedal Duo-Art Reproducing Piano." On page 3 under MAKING READY number 3. it says: 3. It is better for the instrument not have its keys dancing up and down while you are playing music-roll. Therefore, lock the keys by pushing the Key-locking Lever (F) to the right as far as it will go. This lever is directly under the key-bed, usually at the right (though in some instances at the left-hand end) of the instrument.
Neither of my Ampicos, the upright nor the baby grand, have a key- locking device. Do Duo-Art grands have them? Do other Ampicos have them? My Gulbransen-Dickenson foot pumper does have one but would need another layer of felt or a thicker piece to do the job right.
I find watching the keys dancing up and down to be fascinating!
