Nelson-Wiggen Decals
By Don Teach

A man E-mailed me with a question about Nelson-Wiggen nickelodeons. My response is based only on my opinion gathered by reading original literature and having worked on several N-W instruments. I believe it is impossible to know with certainty how a manufacturer really made products fifty years ago.

The question was about Nelson-Wiggen decals. I believe that Nelson- Wiggen pianos that were produced with clear glass had a color decal on the inside front window proclaiming "The Better Automatic" with a picture of a banjo, drum, and piece of sheet music. The bottom of the decal in red letters said "MFG. BY NELSON-WIGGEN CHICAGO."

I think the instruments with art glass had a brass name plate under the glass saying "Manufactured by NELSON-WIGGEN CHICAGO". I have seen several original machines change ownership with the art glass removed before the sale. Perhaps the seller needed the glass for another machine (I hope) or a nice new bathroom window (humor).

The other question was about the coin entry on Nelson-Wiggen machines. I have seen two main types of coin entry, both being nickel operated. The first one was a drop-coin type with a brass plate surrounding it saying Nelson-Wiggen on it. The second type was a push-pull coin slide known as a bulldog.

Remember folks, now is the time to buy yourself a nickelodeon and start enjoying life. Just drop a coin and set back. No peddling required.

[ Just leave the peddling to Don! ;-) -- Robbie
