Re: Mills Violano Roll Recuts
By Don Teach
I buy Mills rolls from:
Dick Hack 81C Forest Plaza Annapolis MD 21401 tel 410-841-6688
I have had excellent service from his rolls. The rolls from the Violin Music Co. were cut by Chuck Pfieffer and I would not suggest him as a source. He took deposits from collectors over ten years ago and has not refunded the money or given any rolls. At least not to me. Dick Hack has delivered and the rolls are excellent. Make sure to get the Mexican roll as it was my favorite when I loaned it to him out of 100 rolls I had.
Remember folks, "If you don't get them now, tomorrow may be too late." That goes for nickelodeon pianos also. Don Rand makes only a limited quantity of copies and then he moves on to another roll.
I have several reproducer pianos and urge anyone that can to add a nickelodeon to their collection. All collectors have different favorites. My personal favorite is an A-roll piano such as a Seeburg "E." There have been several Seeburg "E" models advertised in Antique Trader and the MBSI bulletin over the past year. It plays the music in the correct key. Some of the cabinet pianos transpose the music into another key. In any roll-operated piano the music is dependent upon the right roll. Capitol brand of coin piano rolls seem to be particularly good.
