Introduction and D.C. Motor Problem
By Michel Goffin

As gently asked by the moderator, following is a short presentation of the reasons why I'm on this list.

My name is Michel Goffin and I'm "in real life" the political Counsellor at the Belgian Embassy in Jakarta. My native langage is French so don't be afraid to try out some frog's langage to diversify what's on the net all the time.

More seriously, I collect music boxes and I have a Welte Mignon player. I collect music boxes not for the sake of collecting or investing in antiques but just for the wonderful music they can produce if they are good ones. My preferences go for the mid 19th-century ones, Nicoles Freres or Ducommun Girod.

The most fascinating machine I have is a modern Baldwin 9-foot SD10 grand piano with a Welte Mignon mechanism adapted to it plus 200 rolls. This piano was transformed very nicely by Ian in Sydney. The rolls are playing beautifully and the music on that grand modern piano looks "real".

I have a problem however: the rolls are driven by a modern electric DC motor and not by air pressure. The electricity levels here in Jakarta are uneven and I think something died in the electronic board or in the motor; I can't play my piano anymore... Can anybody out there help me by providing me with a kit: a nice new motor that can drive the rolls (on 6, 9 or 12 volts)?

[ Editors note:
[
[ Bonjour, Michel, and welcome to MMD. We have several French-speaking
[ members here and perhaps you'll hear from them! Please tell us about
[ the "flea markets" and collecting in Indonesia.
[
[ Rather than install a different motor, it would be best to attempt
[ repair of the dc motor existing in your piano. Among our members
[ world-wide are experienced electronic technicians, and it should be
[ possible to repair the damaged part or obtain a replacement part. In
[ addition, a dear friend of mine is a Swiss engineer doing business in
[ Jakarta -- I think he could help you!
[
[ Please write with more details of the motor and control board, and
[ also how to contact Ian in Sydney.
[
