Data Base Rollography
By Robbie Rhodes
It believe it was collector Mike Montgomery who coined the name "Rollography", inspired by the "Discography" which lists all the trivia you need to know about jazz phonograph records!
This is an example of the fields I used in my data base of music rolls played by Fats Waller (or often J. Lawrence Cook): date \number \title \composers \recuts \comments
8/23 QRS Haitian Blues by Lizzie Miles CC-244, BT-137046 2304 & Spencer Williams
(unk) Clark Haitian Blues (adapted from JC-86, MS-89.4 A-442 (A-roll) QRS 2304
6/24 QRS Clearing House Blues, by Webb CC-314 2661 The & Honesty
8/24 Stand A New Kind Of Man by Sidney Clare CC-245, BT-137219 0677 With a New Kind & Leon Flatow Of Love For Me
The first entry for "Haitian Blues" might look like this in the text file version (.TXT or .TAB or .MRG) of the data base:
8/23\QRS 2304\Haitian Blues\L. Miles & Sp. Williams\CC-244, BT-137046\
In this example I used the backslash (\) as the field separator; another common separator for spreadsheets and data bases is the tab character. (But in e-mail its action is unpredictable.)
Other useful data fields not shown here are
The condition of the roll in my collection The guy who owns the roll sitting in my collection The guy who owns an original copy (not a recut) The guy I think I loaned my roll to The guy I think I borrowed my roll from (!!)
I would like to trade this type of data with others. Anyone interested?
