British Organ Grinders Association (BOGA)
By Hal O'Rourke
Since I will be away from home for two weeks (and don't take E mail along) I thought I should post a note about BOGA since it was mentioned with me as contact.
BOGA was formed in 1992 by a group of British organ enthusiasts who felt that they wanted to break away from FOPS and other groups who were more interested in larger organs. Before this gets a discussion going over here let me say that I do not support any similar organization in America. I already think we have at least one too many mechanical music organizations already. Oh no - lets not get that discussion started either - I'll get back on the subject.
Much to the surprise of many, the organization has succeeded and has many members from all over the world (21 in the USA). They publish a newsletter, hold rallies (all in the UK), and annual meetings much the same as MBSI/MID AM. In the beginning I joined and volunteered to be the US focal point for collecting dues and to facilitate "drop shipping" of the publications to save postage. For my effort I was rewarded with the title of "US Vice President" and seem to have the job permanently. The organization is "all Volunteer" and nobody is paid.
The annual dues is $25 for which you get quarterly newsletters usually 12 or 16 pages. To be quite honest there's not a lot in the newsletter of interest to most Americans, but if you're extremely interested in small hand cranked organs it contains information on current builders that can't be found elsewhere. For a sample copy of a recent newsletter send me a self addressed #10 business size envelope with $.55 postage.
