Re: MFG Date of Piano
By Michael Concordia
Bill, thanks for the info. I took a closer look and from what you describe about the Dayton piano, I can be reasonably sure it is not a Dayton. The 'Orth' piano does have separate holes for the tuning pins in the plate; it does have a window in the plate for the S/N. I believe my original note was in error on the "New Scale". This is cast into a trim piece that screws on above the plate (it overlaps the top edge of the plate and is about 2.5" high). The words appear at about the center of the piano. Also, on this same trim piece "Fully Warranted" is cast on the left hand side. This particular piano has a Standard Double Valve action and from the look of the wind motor brackets (cast, not stamped steel) and a few other details, I am guessing that it is an older vintage of Standard. One other question Bill, were piano serial numbers given out in some sort of sequential order to various mfr's as they came along? Are they never repeated from one mfr to another? If so, might it be possible to go into the piano atlas and look for the serial number (or the block of numbers it would be included in) and back out the mfr this way? I realize this would not be an easy task but it seems possible.
