New File (coinola.zip) in FTP Site
By Jody Kravitz
At George Bogatko's request, I have placed a .ZIP file in the FTP archive which contains his wonderful arrangement of Frosty the Snowman, arranged for an O-Roll machine. The arrangement was tested using a SoundBlaster AWE-32 PC Sound Board, using downloaded "Sound Fonts". The "Sound Fonts" allow the AWE-32 synthesizer board to play back the actual recorded sounds George made from Craig Brougher's O-Roll orchestrion, in response to the MIDI input from the file.
Here's the good news: George has decided to share the MIDI performance _AND_ the SoundFonts with us. He's put them together in one package.
There is a prerequisite: You must have a SoundBlaster AWE-32 PC Sound Card __AND__ 8 meg of on-the-soundboard RAM. If you have this, you'll discover its possible to hear the tune with surpising realism.
It also introduces you to the concept of "sampled sound synthesis" (my term) and the procedure for editing sampled sounds. The SB AWE-32 board comes with SoundFont (TM Emu Systems) editing software. Beware -- the so-called "value edition" of the AWE-32 board does not have the required memory sockets. Expect to pay between $210 and $250 for an AWE-32 sound board, and between $60 and $80 for the required memory chips.
You may download the readme:
ftp://ftp.foxtail.com/pub/mechanical-music/misc/coinola.txt
or the entire file (about 3 meg) if you have a SB AWE-32:
ftp://ftp.foxtail.com/pub/mechanical-music/misc/coinola.zip
Enjoy. Please let us know how you like it if you try this out.
