Welte Mignon Test Rolls
By John McClelland

In response to Wayne Stahnke's comments on the test rolls: I have a copy of a T-98 (Green Welte) test roll, from the 1920's. Stamped (or stenciled) in purple ink is the notation "SCALA FEUR WELTE MIGNON" several feet beyond that, handwritten in blue ink is "Controlle No 1". The note test then begins, but without repetition, each note also has the note name (A,B,C, etc) hand written befor the hole, again in blue ink. The break between bass and treble is noted on the roll and the tempo changes from 80 to 100. The 2nd test is the single note/chord type and the 3rd test is the MF pneumatic setting. It is for the Green Welte system because of the long chain perforations that begin with test #3.

I also have Licensee test rolls from Deluxe and the Brown box/Gold label factory ones, in addition to the usual QRS one and a recut done by Frank Adams in the 1970's. Wayne, you're welcome to use the rolls for research because I would really like to see an extensive test roll for Licensee developed that will insure that the machine can be dailed in so the rolls played will faithfully recreate the artist. Too many of the test rolls extant are inaccurate and vague. Which results in pianos that sound terrible!
