Playrite and Hack Music Rolls
By Dick Hack
I have just caught up with the last several weeks of this group, having returned from the organ rally this past Monday and having to catch up with work which piled up while away.
I guess by now everyone must realize that the buyout rumor of Play-Rite is, and was, totally untrue. It is amazing to me that such a rumor lasted so long. On the contrary, Play-Rite has been working very hard to complete the third perforator, which will allow them to produce 88 note rolls simultaneously with two custom projects, all at the same time. I believe that all three perforators are now on line.
I have been remiss in not listing the rolls I handle with the group. Presently, I am selling Mills Violano Rolls (manufactured by Play-Rite). We have already shipped a huge amount of Violano Rolls. We have had very good response by our customers as to both quality of the rolls, boxes, and labels and also to the selection of the arrangements. The initial offering was 5 different sets of fifteen rolls each. These sets are sold out, and the rolls are being shipped as completed. However, I am now selling a set of twelve (half popular and half classical) Mills Violano rolls. These rolls will be shipped in about four months to the subscribers, and there are still some sets available. Please phone me if interested. Also, I will have a limited amount of single rolls for sale at the Chicago Convention at the mart, as I did at the organ rally.
I also have a limited number of Unika rolls and Pierre Eich Solophone and Accordeon Jazz rolls left from earlier projects. And a few titles of 75 note Welte orchestrion rolls done by Durward Center and myself are also available.
Also, Play-Rite will soon be starting to make 176 note Duo-Art reproducing pipe organ rolls for an earlier project of ours.
On a personal note, my interests in Mechanical Music are Band and Dance organs, coin pianos and orchestrions, Violanos, Reproducing pianos, some jukeboxes, phonographs, and, yes, Scopitones! I enjoy doing my own restoration work, and have done some work for others.
I hope to see many of you at Chicago!
