Help Adjust Pratt-Read Player
By Larry Toto
Greetings to everyone,
I have been restoring a Pratt-Read Player. The player mechanism itself it working well. I have found the following problem: When a note is played by hand, the hammer strikes the string an then backs off the string the requisite 5/8" as long as the note is held. However, when the player strikes the note and holds it, the force of the closed pneumatic on the jack pushes the backcheck forward a little farther, causing the some hammers remain in contact (lightly bouncing) with the strings.
Since the key travel is limited by the keyboard bed, this problem is impossible to induce using hand played notes. The is no limiter on the travel of the pneumatic. The felt buttons that the pneumatics push on are adjusted to just about contact when the pneumatics are open.
If any one has any suggestions, I would be thankful to hear from you. I don't want to just make it work, I want it to be right.
Thanks, Larry Toto
