PlayRite and a Technical Question
By A. B. Bonds
This is in response to the query about the quality of the PlayRite product. I got a big bunch of PlayRite rolls for my Ampicos about ten years ago. They were far less in cost than most other recut alternatives, and had a wider catalog than QRS for reproducers. Overall, I'd rate them as acceptable, but not exceptional. The boxes were pretty limp. Paper quality is OK. Some of them were very ragged, indicating extremely dull punches. Out of about two dozen, two or three had torn chains or holes where they didn't belong. Whether they amount to a good value depends on how compulsive you are. I would hasten to add that the quality may have improved since my purchase, but I was not inspired to get any more at that time. I'd be interested in hearing of other experiences.
On another topic, I have a number of 88-note rolls that I really enjoy, but have had less than satisfactory experience playing them on my Ampico B. With the A they are just fine--shut off the expression and use the buttons on the rail to get whatever dynamics you want. The B seems to settle in at just about the lowest dynamic there is and limps along with these, albeit it works fine with standard Ampico rolls. Is there some pneumatic flummery that can be performed that will easily kick the B into a more rousing mode for 88-note rolls?
