Black Forst Flute Clock Restoration
By George Holzwarth
Dear Mr. Kravitz,
I am in the process of restoring a Black Forest tallcase flute clock, built 1820-1830, which has been in my family since around 1880. A similar movement is on exhibit in the Deutsches Uhrenmuseum in Furtwangen, and is shown in diagrammatic form in Karl Kochmann's booklet, "Black Forest Musical Clocks". It keeps good time and again plays tunes quite well, now that the bellows have been recovered by a professional organ rebuilder.
My next problem is this. The crown wheel and two of the strike release levers are missing, but the rest of the strike train, including a bell with a marvelous tone, is intact. I would like to obtain dimensional drawings of the missing parts from an existing historical clock of that time period, or find someone who has a similar Black Forest flute clock who would let me make measurements on their movement. Is this a question suitable to your listserver? If so, please subscribe me to the list and I will post the above question. If you know a better place to post the question, please let me know.
Thanks for your help.
