Crumpled Rolls
By John Phillips
Joyce Brite asks about making crumpled rolls playable. Joyce, if the rolls are crumpled and not torn, ironing them will improve things a lot. I lay out a section of crumpled roll on top of 10 to 20 sheets of newspaper (all on a flat table that won't be damaged by moderate heat). Try to avoid the crease in the centre of the sheets of newspaper - my recollection of the huge size of U.S. papers suggests that shouldn't be too difficult. The point of the newspaper is that it releases some steam when it is heated, and this seems to help. For a really bad crease, try applying water along its length with an artist's brush and then iron it off immediately. A moderate setting on your iron should work but, please, do some practising on unimportant crumpled-up paper first!
If the rolls are torn as well, iron them first and then repair them with Filmoplat P paper conservation tape. There was a lot of discussion about that in the Digest a few weeks ago. Good luck, John Phillips.
