Re: Macintosh and MIDI

Hi Rick, good to hear from you. I just returned from ten days out-
of-town, and I'm just now getting to the accumulated e-mail.

Here are the utilities I use regularly for email MIDI:

 PKZIP/PKUNZIP on PC
 UNPOST on PC
 BinHex4 and DeskZap on Macintosh

For example, the MIDI file comes to me encoded with UUencode --
I extract the text-data with a simple text processor (Edit2.0 from
Symantic) into a new text file. Then I launch Apple File Exchange and
transfer the text file to a DOS disk. The DOS file is carried (via
"Sneaker Net") across the room to the old PC. I launch the shareware
utility UNPOST on the PC and it performs the UUdecode operation.

If the file was not previously compressed then I now have a file called
SONG.MID, ready to play on the PC. Otherwise it may say SONG.ZIP, and
then I use PKUZIP to get the MIDI file.

I carry the DOS file (via "Sneaker Net") back across the room to the
Macintosh and once again use Apple File Exchange to convert from DOS
format to Mac file format. The file, "SONG.MID", appears, but it has a
blank icon ("unknown type"). Then I launch DeskZap which lets me
change the file type from "????" to "MIDI". I can also change the
creator from "????" to "MTPC", which is the code for MasterTracks.
Then I can double-click on the icon and it will launch MasterTracks and
open the file for playing.

I will be performing with the South Frisco Jazz Band at the big
Sacramento Trad Jazz Festival on Memorial Day weekend;hope to see you
there.

Best regards, Robbie Rhodes <rrhodes@foxtail.com>
