Re: Recordo Rolls
By Bob Conant

A couple of questions have come up to which I would like to add my 1/50 of a dollar.

Recordo rolls were quite effective and give a pretty good approximation of many reproducing piano rolls. Harvey Roehl has a Tom Thumb piano that has been restored, the piano by himself, the Recordo system by Mike Kitner, and it really plays up a storm. It sounds much much better than you would expect, especially considering the small size of the piano. In a grand, I would expect that it would play very well indeed.

Relative to the question about new Violano rolls, Dick Hack from Anapolis, Maryland, is currently running a subscription recut project. I expect that it was these rolls that were referenced as currently in production at Playright. It is likely that Dick may have a few available subscriptions left. I am fairly sure that he would sell them only as a set and not as individual rolls. Sets are 15 rolls and the cost, as I remember was around $75 per roll. All rolls are hand selected and are some of the best music around. No junk.

Hope this helps,

Bob Conant
