Pauline Alpert Re-Enacting the Artis
By Karl Petersen

NPR on Performance Today presented the new CD done by Artis W featuring Pauline Alpert. The commentator said he had never heard Pauline play, and proceeded to give a complete history of the music on the CD from Golliwog's Cakewalk into ragtime, stride, and on. It either took him a couple of days to research it all, or he reads remarkably well from the CD enclosure. It was impressive, none the less. I must find the CD now, even though I must have heard half of it on the program.

The commentator's only faux pas I could recognize was consistently putting a "t" on the end of Artis.

After the special commentary was done, the regular Perf Today host presented the Glow Worm cut, with more program notes, to close out the session.

These performances were said to be taken from transcription disks and so some 78rpm hiss was still apparent, but not distracting enough to avoid listening to the music.

Now we need the audio/MIDI/reproducer conversions to complete the series described as seven (!) Gershwin-era artist CDs. So, let's see, Ohman and Arden, Adam Carroll, Ferde Grofe', Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, ah, ah, well, you're guess is as good as mine unless you're Artis.

It's really nice to hear some music by some artists presented by some dedicated musician/technicians we enjoy, know, and recognize, eh?
