Introduction
By Ed Schmidt
I am a member of MBSI and MBSGB. Was an early member of AMICA and The Reed Organ Society. In the process of renewing my membership with AMICA. My main interest is in organettes and small roll playing instruments. I also have an Ampico A upright, Tanzbar player accordions and music boxes.
In 1979 I developed a numerically controlled punch with interchangeable punch heads so that I could reproduce music for organettes and other instruments like it was originally made. I also constructed a number of different size tracker bars with photo diodes for copying the old music. I assembled my computer from a kit (Cromemco Z2D) that had 64 KB of memory and a Z80) processor. Since MIDI was not yet a standard, I developed my own format for saving roll information, programs to edit the data and programs to punch new music. The computer also contained six sound cards from SSM (one voice / board) on which the recorded music could be played. A keyboard was also interfaced to the computer for direct recording of music. Times and computers have changed. I am currently porting all of the programs over to a PC system and all of the song files are being converted to MIDI.
I have gone over all of the old messages to Jody and have found some useful information. As soon as I get a chance I will try and pick up on some broken threads.
