MIDI for Concertola (ref digest 95.11.22)
By Robbie Rhodes

Jim, subscriber Mike Ames of Solana Instruments Museum has added Midi In-and-Out to several organ systems, and I think the same electronics would work just fine for your Concertola. The package consists of a bi-directional Midi controller card, and some "commutator" and "decommutator" circuit cards connected to the magnets and pouch switch contacts. Mike can play an organ roll and record the valve data to a Midi file, and then reverse the process.

The Midi file format for the data from a reproducing piano roll is simple: The tracker bar channels are scanned from bass to treble and transferred without any "mapping" ("crossing the wires") to Midi format. When the file is viewed in a Midi sequencer it appears just like the real music roll, and Middle-C on the piano matches Middle-C in Midi. This is the only _sane_ way to present it, because when you edit the file (deleting the noise caused by tears and repairs in the roll) you will be looking at the paper roll and the computer screen simulataneously.

This format is used by Richard Tonnesen and me and several other folks doing editing of reproducing piano music.

Send a note to Mike for info: Mike Ames, e-mail: ames@foxtail.com
