Those lovely Aeolian valves
By Les Smith
Actually this post doesn't have anything at all to do with Aeolian valves, but it does address the original problem of the player shift- ing into reroll prematurely. I walked into an identical late 60's- early 70's Aeolian player today that had the same problem-- shifting into reroll part way through the roll, with no obvious damage to the edge of the roll. It turned out that the nut that holds the upper brake assembly in place had loosened up (probably from vibration) to the point that there was no braking action at all during "play". This caused the roll, at purely random times, to "flutter" just enough to allow a signal to sneak through the reroll port and shift the transmission into reroll. Tightening the nut restored the functioning of the brake and corrected the problem.
