I am trying to replace a music box my mother had which was destroyed in a fire. She was given the box by her grandfather sometime in the 30's. I understood that he purchased it at the Chicago World Fair, whenever that was.
I have been told that it probably was a Thorens based on my description:
"Simple box design, maybe 10X10 inches, sawtoothed disks between four and five inches in diameter, with the name of the song embossed in the disc. The box had a little compartment that held the discs upright on the side, so I would estimate that it was about 6 or 7 inches high. A metal arm swung across and held the disc in place and then a simple switch started the music playing."
Can anyone identify this more exactly. I have now seen Thorens that are upright and/or big, and the mechanism looks the same, but I can't quite zero in on the exact make, model, or age. Any help would be very very much appreciated.
Also, anyone who has or knows of one for sale I would be happy to pay a reasonable finders fee.
Thank you.
