Welte Restoration Project Update
By Stacey Bowers
Hi Jody - just a quick update. First off - many thanks for all of your work. The daily digest is wonderful - something interesting to look forward to each day. I wanted to give you an update on my Welte project. I have finished the restoration of an original Welte-Mignon upright, built in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1917. The instrument plays the T-100 (Red) rolls. Mike Walter in the group lead me to Mark Reinhart and Mike Kitner as a source for a T-100 test roll. Mike Kitner had the roll - which was of course, very helpful. I can report that the instrument is absolutely incredible. I have about 50 rolls - some of them just amazing. I'm a former pianist and piano collector and I must say, I've never heard anything quite like it. I'd like to encourage some dialogue within the the group regarding the Welte. I'm very interested in sources for other rolls - original or recuts. Mark Reinhart recuts rolls periodically and I am getting those as they become available. Of course, the Charles Smith Welte-Mignon book is wonderful - but all of you know that! Lets discuss the Welte Mignon.
[ Stacey, [ Thanks for the positive feedback and congratulations on the completion [ of your project. I've forwarded this to the group as it seemed [ appropriate. I hope we hear of some new roll sources, as well as [ some of the ones that have previously been mentioned. [ Jody |
