Re: Reproducing Pianos
By C. James Cook, forwarded

I really don't know a better category, Roger, so stay here.

The field seems to be limited on the net. I found an area for QRS on America OnLine (AOL), but it didn't seem to be very popular, judging by the lack of posted queries and opinions in that area.

I sometimes kibitz with my neighbor, Charles Jackson (Charlie the Tuner), over rebuilds he performs. He's working on a Gulbransin player at the moment (a large job given the glued stack), but he has a lovely Mason & Hamlin "A" with an Ampico A in his living room. There are other projects in the future.

Of the various midi piano setups, the QRS Pianomation looked interesting for a few reasons. Input format is a CD (CD-ROM), but the midi in/out ports allowed other formats which compensates for a (possibly) limited library. One interesting feature were CDROMs that had the Midi info on the left track with an orchestra audio (mono) recording on the right track that you would send to a stereo or speaker mounted in the cabinet. In other words, your piano played along with the orchestra.

The other interesting option was a wireless (infrared) link to the piano that worked up to 200 feet away. I thought it neat to hack on the Macintosh upstairs, telling it to play the piano downstairs.

Cheers!
