Digest 950813b Mac Midi Archive - Success!
By Robbie Rhodes

I made of copy of digest 950813b and stripped the file to begin with the line

(This file must be converted with BinHex 4.0)

Then I launched Binhex v4.0 (dated Jan 1986, and it still runs fine under the latest system, Sys 7.5).  The result was a new application file named JeffD.Mac.sea.  So far so good.

The extension ".sea" denotes "self-extracting archive", which is actually a small program which executes itself, so I gave it the ol' double click.  Oops!  A big message said "Not enough Memory".

So I opened the "Get Info" window and increased the "Preferred Size" value from 295k up to 500k, just to give it more system memory to work in.  That did the trick, I guess, and it "self-extracted" into the four files as planned.  Success!

The PC version was processed in a similar manner:

I copied digest 950813c to a new file named MidiUU.txt and stripped it down to the line

        begin 666 JEFFD.ZIP

and then transferred the file to an MS-DOS formatted floppy using Apple File Exchange.

I used "Sneaker Net" protocol to get it to the PC.  (I carried the floppy across the room!)

Now, at the PC, I used the utility program UNPOST, dated 3/19/94, to convert from UUencoded ascii-text into the binary ZIP file.  The command line was

        > UNPOST -U MIDIUU.TXT

and the result was the new file JEFFD.ZIP, which immediately received my command

        > PKUNZIP JEFFD.ZIP

and which un-zipped and produced the four files.  Gosh.  Jody was right - it was easy!

Jody, can you provide these shareware utilities for the members who need them?
