Question About Roll Playback Speeds
By Robin Pratt
Hi, The "suggested" tempo really has no direct bearing to the size of the take-up spool on most 88-note recordings. The paper is "pulled" through the perforator at a constant speed by rollers, not by the end tabs of the rolls. The only music rolls that there would have been a relationship between the spool size and the recording would have been the companies that had a direct involvement in the production of the piano itself, ie. the AMPICO/DUO-ART/WELTE/ARTECHO's etc. In the Re-enacting instruments, tempo is semi-critical (actually, it's VERY critcal on the recordings of a classical nature!!! Less so on the popular.), but not in the straight 88-note music rolls as they were subject more to "personal" interpretation and inclusion of the operator. Hope this helps.
