Artis Wodehouse, whose digitized Gershwin piano rolls became a top CD 1-2 years ago, is giving a concert a Weill Recital Hall (at Carnegie Hall) on May 18. Titled "Keyboard Wizards of the Gershwin Era," it will be a program of Gershwin, Confrey, Grofe, Bix Beiderbeck, Muriel Pollock, Rube Bloom, Pauline Alpert, and Dana Suesse. This is all from a period when quality popular music was still being produced for piano. The first four on the list need no introduction. Pollock, Bloom, & Alpert were pianist-composers whose relative obscurity today is quite undeserved. Dana Suesse is new to me, but given the company, must be someone worthwhile hearing. Artis will share the stage with a diskclavier, which will "play" some of the selections.
