Mailing List Etiquette
By Jody Kravitz
The 12 or so messages generated yesterday came as an un-welcome surprise to a couple of the initial list members. Two issues were brought up. One is that a lot of mail (12 messages and 29 K bytes) was deposited in their mailbox unexpectedly and in one case ran his system of out mailbox message space. The second issue is that some people may prefer to have the mail arrive in "digest" form -- that is all of the messages for one day would arrive as a single large message. This has the advantages that it automatically groups messages of a related topic and in the case of some of you who are reading mail at work it makes it less offensive to management. At most one "hobby" message per day rather than a possibly unlimited number. The downside of a digest is that it introduces a delay of up to a day for those who'd rather get the messages right away.
Eventually I hope to have a "real" listserver running here, probably using the MajorDomo package. In the meantime, I'm doing it by hand. Once I get something automatic installed each user can select digest or non-digest mode. In the meantime, I've instituted "digest mode" for everybody. I hope this will satisfy everyone for now.
If being on the list at all is unwelcome, please send mail to the following address. I personally read every message.

One last thing. Some list servers appearantly allow for routing messages to a single recipient on the list. I have no way to support such a feature at this time. If you want to send private mail to someone on the list, just use their return address from one of the messages. Please don't send private mail to the list.
