Within the past year, Vulcan Spring Company fabricated a new
Melville Clark motor spring for me at a reasonable price and exactly
to the original specifications. I sent them the original broken spring
still in the barrel, and they packed the new lubricated spring in the
barrel to return it.
As it is a relatively strong spring compared to normal Victrola motor
springs or clock springs, without specialized winding equipment it is
tricky and perhaps a little dangerous for an amateur to remove the
spring from the barrel, or to try to pack it back in.
When I first told them the spring dimensions they were surprised at how
large it was for a household musical device application, but as a maker
of industrial drive springs it was well within their capabilities.
