Seek Ampico Rolls Played By Alexander Brailowsky
By Robbie Rhodes

Mr. John Joswick seeks these Alexander Brailowsky performances as
audio recordings or, preferably, as MIDI file transcriptions of the
Ampico rolls:

67681H Chopin: Etude 0p.25, No.12, C minor
69783H(1) Grieg: Papillon (Butterfly) 0p.43, No.1
69783H(2) Liszt: Au Bord d'une Source (At The Spring)
64011H Stravinsky: Etude 0p.7, No.4, F sharp major
64461H Moussorgsky-Sapellnikoff: Couturiere, La (The Seamstress)

100255V(1) Mendelssohn: Songs Without Words Op.62, No.25, G major
100255V(2) Moussorgsky: Kinder Scherz, Ein (A Child's Prank)
100255V(3) Chopin: Prelude 0p.28, No.6, B minor
100255V(6) Chopin: Prelude 0p.28, No. 7, A major
100255V(7) Schumann: Traumeswirren (Dream Visions)

The Ampico rollography by Elaine Obenchain says about Brailowsky:

"Although possessing an enormous repertoire, Brailowsky is best known
for his Chopin interpretations. Beginning in New York in 1938 he gave
a series of recitals presenting all of Chopin's piano works and, since
that time, has done 30 such concerts. A New York Times review of the
day said, '... he strives -- and attains -- clarity. Neither the eye
nor the ear can detect more than a few obscure notes, and the dynamics
are sharply defined.'"

Mr. Joswick already has MIDI files or recordings of the remaining
Brailowsky rolls. He explains his mission:

"I had known Alexander Brailowsky and am the author of an RCA
CD-booklet essay for the 1996 retrospective "Brailowsky Plays Chopin",
as well as an extensive article published in the September/October
2002 issue of _International Piano_ that included an interview with
Brailowsky's brother-in-law of more than forty years, the eminent
neuropsychopharmacologist Alexander G. Karczmar, M.D., Ph.D., who is
still actively engaged in research at age 87.

"I have long regretted not being able to obtain the remaining
Brailowsky rolls for Dr. Karczmar and other people of my acquaintance
who recall Brailowsky. My hope is to obtain these materials while
Brailowsky's brother-in-law, Dr. Karczmar, will still be able to hear
and enjoy them."
