Michael Waters asked for some information regarding the Lauter-Humana.
While there are probably many on this list better qualified to offer
opinions, I'll pass alone what I know. I friend acquired a Lauter-Humana
several years ago, and I did the repairs to get it running.
Each valve on the piano is mounted in a separate block, making repairs, or
replacements simple. Player Piano Company sells plastic replacements,
although wooden ones can be easily made. The valve blocks are screwed to
the stack with gaskets. This piano only needed tightening of these
170 screws to play well.
The foot pump also had what seemed like a hundred screws holding gasketed
covers. These too were loose.
The entire wind motor mechanism is hinged to swing forward to facilitate
tuning. This was welcome to me, who has battled to too many Aeolians that
had to have their entire player action removed for tuning.
Overall, I was quite impressed with the Lauter, but then again, I am not a
professional technician.
