Hi Michael,
We can talk about this more at length when I have more time
but I have owned 8 Lauter-Humana's. I think they are among the
very finest regular players ever made. An article in the
New York Times many years ago claimed that the Lauters (made
in Newark, NJ) with serial numbers 30,000 to 50,000 were
the finest regular players made in the US. The quality of
materials used to make these units is superb. The ivories
on all the Lauters I've owned are still pearl white and
the soundboards and bridges are in excellent condition.
I paid $800 for my last Lauter which I bought in the early
80's. It was in non-working condition at the time. The
striker pneumatics on my unit have never been rebuilt and
except for very small pinholes at the stress points, the
strikers are still very supple. I really love the bass
register of a Lauter. It's powerful.
Musically,
John A. Tuttle
